 Electric Storage Heater Grants


Grants are available to pay for the replacement of inefficient or faulty storage heaters. Brand new units are fitted that can be up to 30% more efficient. You will therefore make big savings on your electricity bills.


To qualify, you must own the property or be renting from a private landlord. You must have electric storage heaters, not electric fires or portable heaters. You will also need to be in receipt of an income related benefit as shown below.


Who qualifies?


To be assessed for a subsidised replacement electric storage heater, your household must receive one of the following six benefits or benefit combinations. Please also have details of your electric storage heater make and model ready when you contact us:


1. State Pension Credit?


2. Child Tax Credits and have a household income of less than £16,010?*


3. Income - related employment and support allowance

 Plus one of these

  • Receive a work-related activity or support component
  • Has a parental responsibility for a qualifying child
  • Child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element
  • A disabled child premium
  • A disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium
  • A pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium


 4. Working Tax Credit and has a relevant income of £16,010 or less*

 Plus one of the these

  1. Has parental responsibility for a qualifying child.
  2. Is in receipt of a disabled worker element or severe disability element.
  3. Is aged 60 years or over.


5. Income Support OR income-based job seeker's allowance

 Plus one of these

  1. Has a parental responsibility for a qualifying child.
  2. Child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element.
  3. A disabled child premium.
  4. A disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe
  5. Disability premium.
  6. A pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium.


6. Universal Credit and received a monthly earned income of £1,250 or less in any assessment period in the previous 12 months**

Plus one of these

  1. Has a parental responsibility for a child or qualifying young person
  2. Has limited capability for work, or limited capability for work and work-related activity
  3. Receives a disability living allowance (DLA)
  4. Receives a personal independence payment (PIP)


If we think you’re eligible, we will book an appointment to carry out a detailed assessment of your home; this involves a technical survey and energy performance assessment and should take place around one to two weeks after your initial enquiry. During these visits paperwork will need completing, proof of benefits and is applicable a tenancy agreement must be seen and photographed. From the landlord a few forms are also required; these can be emailed for convenience.  


When the qualifying benefits have been confirmed, survey to determine replacement required, EPC to produce a score for the funding and compliant paperwork authorised an installation date can be arranged.

Note that disability benefits do not qualify on their own. You will need to be receiving an income related benefit.
