At Shropshire Green Energy Centre, we’re inspired by the bold new direction the UK is taking to transform its energy landscape and we’re proud to be part of the movement.
The government’s latest Solar Roadmap signals a major shift in how the country generates and consumes power. With a national target of delivering 45–47 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2030, we’re looking at a great opportunity to lower bills, strengthen energy security, and create thousands of clean energy jobs.
To put it in context, that level of solar power could support up to 35,000 jobs and require less than half a percent of UK land, which is proof that big impact doesn’t have to mean big footprints.
Where Solar Meets Everyday Life
This isn’t just a plan for solar farms in fields. The Roadmap makes it clear: solar belongs where people live, work, and park. Key actions include:
Making solar a standard feature on newbuild homes through the Future Homes Standard, reducing household energy costs from day one.
Exploring the untapped potential of car parks as sites for solar infrastructure.
Reviewing safety regulations to pave the way for plug-in solar systems, portable panels ideal for renters or those living in flats with balconies.
These steps aim to make solar energy more accessible, especially for those in housing situations that have traditionally missed out on renewable solutions.
Supporting the Workforce of the Future
As installations ramp up, the UK will need more skilled professionals in the solar sector. The government plans to collaborate with industry groups to address skills shortages and open the door to well-paid, green jobs.
Public Support Is Clear
A massive 88% of the British public now supports solar energy, and for good reason. Since last summer, the government has already approved almost 3 GW of major solar projects, more than the combined total of the past 14 years. That’s the equivalent of powering over half a million homes.
Meanwhile, over 1.5 million UK households already benefit from rooftop solar panels. In just January 2025, more than 15,000 new installations were completed, which is an impressive 16.5% increase year-on-year.
Unlocking Solar for Everyone
Not only is solar one of the cheapest and fastest energy solutions to deploy, it also boosts property value and reduces emissions. That’s why efforts are underway to ensure the financial benefits of solar are accurately reflected when valuing homes, helping homeowners recoup their investment more easily.
For renters and apartment dwellers, the future looks promising too. The government is taking the first steps to introduce plug-in solar systems, which are simple devices that plug into standard sockets and provide immediate power savings. Germany has already embraced this approach, with hundreds of thousands of plug-in units lighting up balconies nationwide.
Solar for Schools and Hospitals
Large public buildings are also set to benefit. A £200 million investment by Great British Energy is bringing solar to schools and hospitals across the country—some facilities are projected to save as much as £200,000 a month on energy bills.
What This Means
This roadmap is not just a national strategy; it’s a call to action for local communities. At Shropshire Green Energy Centre, we’re already seeing growing demand for solar solutions from homeowners, landlords, businesses, and local authorities.
We’re here to help our region embrace this solar-powered future, offering expert advice, certified installations, and access to the latest funding support.
Because a more secure, affordable and sustainable energy system isn’t a distant goal—it’s something we can start building today.
