The UK government allocated £150 million annually from 2022 to 2025 for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) to replace fossil fuel boilers with heat pumps. However, reports show that over £60 million remains unspent, raising concerns about the scheme’s efficiency, which is concerning.
According to OFGEM reports, only £88,821,500 was spent in Year 2 and £50,084,000 in Year 1, leaving a significant portion of the budget unused. Out of 37,879 BUS applications, 26,532 vouchers were issued, totalling £158,775,000 spent. This highlights the underutilisation of the allocated funds for promoting heat pump installations and more is needed to be done to increase the uptake to target more homes across the UK.
