In new reports, the National Audit Office (NAO) has flagged the slow progress in the UK’s journey towards decarbonising home heating. Home heating, contributing 18% of greenhouse gas emissions in 2021, plays a crucial role in the UK’s net zero target by 2050.
Despite the government’s focus on heat pumps in the 2021 Heat and Buildings Strategy, challenges such as high costs and lack of public awareness hinder widespread adoption. The NAO raises concerns about the government’s ambitious targets for heat pump installations and the shortfall in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
From the report, Gareth Davies, head of the NAO, emphasises the need for informed decision-making and effective engagement to drive decarbonisation. It is said that The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) must address uncertainties, including the role of hydrogen in heating and reaching difficult-to-decarbonise homes, for a successful transition.
DESNZ’s initiatives like the ‘Welcome Home to Energy Efficiency’ campaign aim to educate households on sustainable options like heat pumps and insulation. Increased awareness and clear planning are essential to optimise investments and meet decarbonisation goals effectively.
