The Great British Energy Bill has just secured backing in the House of Commons in its second reading with MPs voting 348 to 95 in favour, resulting in a majority of 253.
The government has announced its support for the proposed firm, which will require MPs and peers to authorise Edward Miliband to establish it, with a commitment of £8.3 billion over the duration of this Parliament.
Miliband asserted a straightforward idea: “If it is acceptable for the Danes, French, Norwegians, and Swedes to own British energy assets, then it is equally appropriate for the British people to have that ownership as well”.
The bill aims to bolster renewable energy sources, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions, all while ensuring a stable supply of energy for homes and businesses. If the bill is passed in the final stages at the House of Commons, this will fully allow the establishment of GB Energy and to reduce the UK’s reliance on international gas markets.
