New reports indicate that the UK experienced a significant drop in wholesale electricity prices during the first quarter of 2024 due to a surge in renewable energy production. Renewable sources, including wind, biomass, solar, and hydro, accounted for nearly half of Britain’s energy mix. This increase led to a 22% decrease in average electricity prices. Notably, wind power was the primary contributor.
The rise in renewables also impacted the usage of gas turbine plants and led to a decrease in nuclear power generation. Imports into the UK increased by 75%, with France being a major supplier.
