A worrying trend in the UK property market reported by EDF and Sprift has revealed that millions of households are losing an average of £500 a year on energy bills due to poor insulation. Shockingly, around 55% of homes still adhere to insulation standards set back in 1976 or earlier, resulting in significant heat loss and increased energy expenditure.
The research also goes on to highlight that homeowners of semi-detached properties could save £775 a year in utility bills if they invested in better insulation, showing just how financially beneficial home improvements such as better insulation can be, yet remarkably only a fifth of homeowners have updated their insulation since 2022 – despite the opportunity to save hundreds of pounds each year.
Philippe Commaret from EDF has emphasised the urgent need for progress in enhancing energy efficiency in older homes, stressing that these missed opportunities for upgrades present a clear path towards achieving substantial reductions in energy bills for households across the UK.
